Trapped

Having a sort of low period right now with exercise/food stuff. By sort of I might mean really.  By really I mean a two days of alternating between choking up when thinking about it and feeling completely blank, bleak, and apathetic about it. I.don't.know.the.way.out.

I think that while I'm living on my own, in full-blast work mode during the semester, I lose sight of how extreme or atypical some of my behaviors get. Now that I'm home, co-habitating with real live normal people, it's sort of an eye opener. This stuff is frustrating for my family and for me, and at the same time I just can't let things go, and I feel like shit physically all the time (not sure why this just kicked in, maybe I was too busy to notice it before, maybe a few days of bad eating on the trip down here are still affecting me). Most of all, I hate that my mind is not in a place that lets me be the girlfriend/daughter/granddaughter/sister that I really want to be. I hate that Match even has to think about things like this, at our stage of life:

Leaving tomorrow to visit Match at his place for a few days, then he and I are coming back here (to my parents' house, have I updated since I did the big move from PhD City?) for Christmas together. I'm so, so nervous about how I'm going to handle food/exercise stuff on such a long visit schedule.

I really think the only word I can come up with that can organize my feelings at the moment is just "trapped."

Holiday break commences

To give you an idea of how the past week or so has gone, the last thing Match said to me tonight was: "I really need you to believe that everything will be okay."

Holy holiday stress.  FYI I'm now out of PhD City (miss it already) and with family for the break before I leave for Tropical Research Country. Cue all of the adjustment anxiety to sharing a kitchen, being around a loud group of young men (dad plus two teenage brothers) and three cats plus two dogs plus a house I've never lived in before in a town to which I tie only unhealthy associations.

It WILL be okay, though.

Glorious...not

Because I have a huge deadline today, of course I'm going to do as many consecutive blog posts as I've done in the last month.

My leg has been feeling a lot better for a week or more, so I tried running again today for the first time in about a month.  I was relieved to see that my stamina/running fitness didn't seem to be at all decreased.  The leg was a bit sore but not outright painful, although I'll wait at least a week before testing it again.  But my other knee did hurt. Telling myself it's just because my legs are tight from not running for a while. Oh and I'm on pill placebo week and get really gawdawful cramps, so it felt like a truck was sitting on my uterus for the entire run.  Oh and I wore three layers on my top half but just one light layer on my bottom half, so I had a sweaty back and possibly frostbitten thighs.

So I pretty much feel wrecked. But other than that, it was GLORIOUS.

Love y'all.

"How People Change"

So this op-ed has nothing to do, on the surface, with eating disorders, but the last bit of it  resonated with me in the framework of recovery (from EDs or any number of other issues). The main message is: support and reward, don't judge and penalize.  Brooks aims his points as advice on how to deal with other people, but I think many of us would benefit from applying the same principles to ourselves. Clip:

People don’t behave badly because they lack information about their shortcomings. They behave badly because they’ve fallen into patterns of destructive behavior from which they’re unable to escape.

Strategy Flop, Body Hunger, etc

Calories = boosted two days in a row.  Body = oblivious as far as hunger/fullness/energy goes, but oh well, baby steps.

Remember my wise strategy of making a plan the night before so I wouldn't have to decide what to eat in the moment? Well I failed to double check that I actually had those ingredients in my kitchen, so had to overhaul it on the fly anyway yesterday morning. Wise strategy indeed. I survived, though, imagine that.

Leg = just as busted feeling as ever. UGH, damn you Jiffy Pop bones.

I think this is one of the first weekends of the semester when I've done zero Going Out or socializing at all, but last week I went out 5 nights in a row (!)(there was an election to celebrate!), so I really needed the recharge time and I have enough work to keep me plenty occupied.

I'm still getting used to my new adviser. He is great in a lot of ways, but is also stretched in a lot of directions and sometimes I can't even tell if I think he likes me.  Oh well.  My lab and department are great, and this adviser is definitely the right guy for me to be working with for the research I want to do. Still prepping my application for a megabig grant and I go back and forth between thinking I have no hope and thinking there's no way they can not fund this amazing project I'm cooking up. So we'll see.

Someone commented on an earlier post asking what I meant by "body hunger." When I say that I mean that I don't feel a hunger pain or tummy rumble, but my body just feels sort of depleted, drained, empty.  I usually feel it in my legs and head the most. I've lost a lot of stomach-hunger cues over the course of my ED, they are hyper unreliable, and I often feel it in other parts of my body first.  And then again sometimes my stomach feels empty after a big meal.  Clearly, my body and I have some communication issues.

Happy weekend, love y'all.

Lists, Sloppy Kisses, and Daenerys Dopplegangers

So Day One of Project Suck It Up and Boost Your Damn Calories didn't go so hot today.  I made the mistake of telling myself I'd add more calories without actually making an implementation plan.  So at every meal I sort of thought about it, got indecisive about what to add, and gave up.  BUT tomorrow will be different, because I already made a point of writing down what I will add when, so I won't have to try to make that call 'in the moment' tomorrow. Historically, this is a much more effective strategy for me.

Cammy mantra: When in doubt, make a list.

Further, I have to give Match props for knowing exactly how to call on my logical side to propel me along without being overly pushy.

Example: Today when he asked me how adding cals had gone. I told him the truth, but that I planned to add X tomorrow.

Match: That's great. But do you think that amount is enough?
Me: I'm not sure. It's easier for me to step it up in increments.
Match:  That makes sense.  But you only have two months before you leave for [Tropical Research Country].  If someone was trying to lose that much weight in that amount of time, do you think you'd recommend they only cut as many calories as you're adding?
Me: Well...umm...okay I get your point. Damnit [Match]...

I don't think I've mentioned this, but Match has actually lost a TON of weight over the last 5 months or so. He had gained a good bit in his Master's program and now he's slimmed back down to exactly what he weighed when we started dating.  It makes me feel weird sometimes when we're out to eat, knowing that in some ways his diet is more restrictive than mine (more in terms of content than amount; he made big efforts with his sugar intake and I have an unabashed sweet tooth).  But, unlike most people that are trying to lose weight, he doesn't obsess over it out loud all the time or even bring it up overtly, and overall I think that seeing him make changes for the better has helped remind me that that's the same way I need to approach getting healthier (in my own direction) too.

And now for something lighter because I feel the need to compensate when I have multiple heavy posts in a row, I bring you a superfluous cute animal picture:

Newest song on my recovery playlist (PLEASE don't judge me because it's Christina Aguilera. Doesn't she look like Daenerys from 'Game of Thrones' in the cover art, btw?).

I can't believe this semester is almost over. I can't even believe this week is almost over.  That whole time speeding up as you age thing is so real it's scary.

I can't even believe this day is going to be over in 20 minutes, and that means I have to wake up in 5.333 hours. Gnight, love y'all.

Seasonal Shift

I think the winter blues are coming to get me again.  Then again, I don't feel depressed and sad so much as just exhausted and darker and a bit incapable of...I'm not even sure what.  I still love it here. I just feel like I'm not on top of my game.

Which is probably objective as well as subjective. The not on top of my gameness, I mean.  Match broached the subject of my weight/health with me today.  I don't think it comes through in photos right now because I tend to be wearing a good number of clothes/layers, but my weight is the lowest it's been since before I graduated from college. I think Match realizes he's in more of a position to see the warning signs than anyone else and is starting to feel worried about it. My heart is acting up occasionally again, although instead of the constant pain/aches I used to have it's more like distinct, short flutters that make me jump and then are over just as fast. That has happend around Match a time or two and it scares the shit out of him, understandably.  My eating also hasn't been great at all on our last couple of visits.  So, yes, overall I'm putting him in an incredibly difficult position and I feel incredibly bad about it.

Aside from Match visits I'm eating my "standard", and although I'm almost never stomach-hungry, I feel like I spend a ton of time "body hungry" but... I guess I just lack the appetite or motivation to do much about it.  The thought of increasing my food while also decreasing overall exercise (not that I'm actually DOING that, just the thought of it makes it feel scary enough to be real, see how fucked the whole thing is?) and losing my running completely (again) (no improvement in my bum leg at all)...I just get the "wtf are you kidding" reaction in my head and then feel too exhausted to process it any further. I know I'm not performing as well as I could right now, in terms of work and productivity, although I'm getting by just fine.  I don't like settling for just fine, though, and I'm so frustrated with myself.

On that note, all I really want to do right now is sleep, signing off.

Probably Not Unanticipated

Well, I'm sure this surprises exactly zero of you, but I appear to have accumulated some kind of overuse damage in my shin/knee region that has once again forced me to give up running.  And believe me, if it hurts enough for me to finally call it, it's not just an ache.  I'm debating whether to get an x-ray, because the location and type of pain feels much more like a stress fracture than a shin splint (see a good description of the distinctions here).

I haven't run in exactly a week (and that one run was after taking one day longer between runs than I normally do), and it's worse than ever today.  Of course, I haven't scaled back on any other weight-bearing activities, because that would be logical and smart and when it comes to exercise I ain't never neither.

UGH.

Have your PB and eat it too....

Recovery gratitude d'jour: Being able to lick the knife after making a peanut butter sandwich without totally flipping my shit over how many calories I picked up in that blissful tongue swipe. God lipids are great. It's the small things, you know?

Halloweekend update

Hey everyone.  I have been way out of touch with blogland because my schedule right now is pretty overwhelming.  I feel like I get a good mix of work and play here, but pretty much every day is super-long, for better or worse.  Still LOVING the program and am making a ton of friends.

Randoms in bullet points because I'm crunched for time, as always these days:

-This was the first year I've had a real birthday party since I turned 18 (I'm the big 2-6 now, YIKES). I had SUCH an amazing time that I was on Cloud Nine for days afterwards.  I didn't have to buy any of my (many, I'll admit) drinks and got asked to dance by a flattering number of people and generally just really enjoyed everyone's company.  Auspicious start to the next year of my life.

-I'm applying for some super high-stakes grants right now (well into the six figures in dollars), and I'm really hoping the reviewers think my project is as awesome as I do.

-Had some major personal drama earlier this week that had me more distressed, stressed, emotionally upended and confused than I've been in a long time. Or since I last tried to break up with Match, I guess, but this was not directly Match-related (LONG story).  Granted, I partly brought it on myself and probably needed that kind of jolt as a wake-up call to get back on track.  Major gratitude to the reader that listened to my venting/obsessing through the whole thing. I owe you, lady.

-Due to the fact that I have both individual and family history of physiological manifestations of stress, I ended up spending the morning in the campus health clinic yesterday because my stomach was so torn up that I was puking up blood (this was NOT purge-related in any way, I've never dealt with that particular behavior).  The doctor just sampled me every which way and told me it was probably just stress, go to the ER if it happens again.

-It hasn't, although my stomach still feels really weird most of the time.  Maintaining calories in spite of that.

-I was in the clinic a week or two earlier for some routine bloodwork, and that time I had a male doctor that really drilled me about my ED history (I'm a good girl and put it on the paperwork) and status, and yesterday I had a female doctor that didn't even mention it.  That was a relief, but sort of interesting.

-In the midst of all that, things with Match are solid right now.  We had a great time on his last visit here, and I'm going there next weekend.  I think a lot of this week's turmoil reminded me not to take for granted how absolutely and completely I can trust this guy.

-There is a girl I see at the gym all the time that clearly is entrenched in an ED.  It really hurts to see her and ideally there would be some supportive, insightful way to reach out but I just don't know how.  I have absolutely no clue how much people might guess about me based on appearances, but I get the death stare from her every time I even walk by, which indicates to me she might still be in the competitive and/or denial stage (I've never really had the competition-trigger component, my crazy is pretty much endogenous, woot, but I've had denial in boatloads).  I'm worried about her.

-On ED stuff: no real change to report.  Exercise is same, weight is same, general lack of motivation to make changes is the same but at least I'm maintaining.  My appetite isn't entirely as non-existent as when I first moved here, but after a rebound spike it fell back to pretty low, so I'm proud of myself for at least maintaining my weight at a time when it would be SO easy to push my intake much lower.

Alright lovelies I've got to run, tons of work to get done before going out Halloween partying tonight.  Our costume theme is "Fractured Fairytales", going to FREEZE my "Tinkerbell's Bad Twin" ass off but that's part of it I guess.

Finally Growing Again

Whoooaa, it's been a while since I posted and Blogger went and changed the whole durn interface on here.  If you Google Overlords are listening, I am old and set in my ways and don't like this.

Cranky opening, but seriously, I cannot remember the last time my mood was this high for this many days in a row.  I am SO much happier with my life here.

I seriously feel like every single day, I know and/or can do more than I did the day before.  My days are extremely busy and often long, but I often feel like every single hour I spent on campus was stimulating, enriching, and productive.  I fucking love this, this growing again.  It's so good to feel like the old me after the doldrums of my MS program.

I'm also way happier with the community here, and feel like I'm building a pretty good network.  I'm starting to slowly, SLOWLY but surely find myself relaxing food/exercise routines in order to accomodate socializing along with my work.  I don't want to ruin this trajectory.

I hope you're all well, love y'all.

Busy, Hawngry, and Boy Update

Oh hi there, would you believe there's finally an update? Things here have been hella busy--my schedule here is the total opposite of during my Masters, when I often only went to campus about once a week.  Now I average about 11 hours on campus each day, with about 13-14 on Wednesdays when things are extra packed.  And you know what? I am LOVING it.  I really like my lab, the people in my classes, the profs I interact with, etc. I volunteered for a couple of different committees, joined a non-academic club on campus, and am teaching a class for my adviser while he's gone for the next two weeks.   I'm learning a ton and finally feel productive and purposeful, which does absolute wonders for my general satisfaction with life.

I even went out this weekend and did some very social, non-routine things, and had a blast. You know, I have spent so much of the last few years being pretty wrapped up in routines and/or depressed and isolated, and I sometimes forget that I'm actually really good at being social and enjoy people quite a bit. I actually went to a bar where there was dancing . . . and DANCED.  Do you know how long that's been, y'all? Random: turned out that one of the girls dancing with us was my PhD adviser's wife, they're young enough to blend right in with the grad students (his band was playing at the bar, he's good!). Success.

Food: Remember how I mentioned that the climate here absolutely decimates my appetite? Well apparently I've adjusted, because all of the sudden it was back last week.  No gradual reappearance, everything was just like it had been since I'd moved here, and then on Friday I stood up from lunch and had an odd sensation. I was hungry. No, not hungry, all of the sudden my body was in ZOMG FEED ME FEED ME I'M HAWNGRY FEED ME mode. I'm guessing anyone who has ever gone through refeeding knows what I mean. Gah.  I guess it's a good sign, though.

Exercise: I've done a much better job compensating for the extra walking here, but really do need to start working on tamping down from that baseline formal workout time.  With my current workload those hours REALLY would be better spent on my data, papers, etc, and I'm trying to keep that in mind as a motivator.

Weight: A post or two ago I mentioned I'd been doing weigh-ins at the gym 2-3 times a week. I have actually weighed myself only about once since then, and not at all in the past 10 days or so.  I think that since I've been trying to get the exercise under control more I'm bracing myself for the numbers to start going up again, and frankly I just don't want to know.  Too many other things that I need to fit into my mindspace right now.

Boy: So, the last time I wrote I was in existential crisis mode about what to do with Match.  I have to say I'm still confused but less so.  The whole failed breakup attempt did air some issues that needed to be dealt with, so that was good, and we've been trying some other things to feel more connected, which I think are working.  I know I go back and forth on this and it probably seems incredibly stupid.  Things have at least been calm over the past week and we've been getting along.  We're planning our next visit and I'm genuinely excited to see him...he really is my best friend. We'll see how things play out.  He found a couple's therapist that is willing to do Skype sessions and wants us to try her out.  I'm not so sure, and he's not pushing, but it's on the radar at least.

I hope everyone's week is off to a great start.  I'm so zapped at the end of each day that I haven't has the energy to post as much, but I appreciate you ladies and really hope you're all doing okay.

love y'all

Confused

So I tried to break up with Match today.

And of course, just like every fucking time, I caved in and couldn't finish it.  All I accomplished was stressing both of us the hell out, crying a lot, and losing half a day of work time.

It's really, really hard to terminate 3 years worth of bond with a phone call.  And it's not like we'd been fighting--we've been arguing/bickering WAY less recently.  We haven't had a single argument since he left here from the last visit. It's just that I've felt disconnected and am questioning whether this situation is what I want. It's not all him--he is so good to me in a lot of ways. We're not 100% compatible, of course. We don't match in some ways that cause issues at times. So that's a part, although not atypical I think. But part of it is just the fact that we're 16 hours apart....until the spring, when I'll be nine time zones away for five months.  I'm in my mid-twenties and feeling like if I'm going to be tied to a relationship, it needs to be more than visits a few times a year and phone calls squeezed in at the end of long days.  And the last couple of visits have been a bit rocky, I was ready for them to be over when the day of the return plane trip came.

I blame the distance, but sometimes even when we're together I don't think this is what I want.  But then I can't make myself let it go either.  I have no idea, obviously.

I don't know if I'll ever find someone that treats me as well as he does.  And as someone whose earliest memories are of seeing her biological dad beating the shit out of her mother, I hate myself for not knowing how important that is to me.

I feel like he's my only guarantee of not being alone. I already am alone in so many ways. Every day. If I feel this disconnected from the world while I'm in a relationship with an attentive man, I can't imagine what it would be like to not have that one person that I know will always be there at any time. He knows nearly everything about me that I'm afraid to tell anyone else. I trust him more than anyone else to not judge me for any of my quirks/habits/fears/issues. That is a fearful, pathetic, selfish excuse for not wanting to end things, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit it's on my mind.  And despite all that I'm still not sure it's what I want.

I feel like I'm in an a situation where no matter how I play my cards, I end up failing.  People who know how unhappy I've been at times in the relationship will think I'm wrong and weak for not ending it already and moving on. People who don't know will think I'm wrong and stupid for tossing it away.  I don't know what the fuck I really know and am afraid of having regrets no matter what direction I go.

The book I've been reading this weekend, After Life by Rhian Ellis and Nancy Pearl, has a few passages that really hit home with me in the context of all this (I didn't actually like the story much, but I did end up highlighting a good number of passages).

"Two people never love each other at the same time...one loves, and the other is in love with being loved.  The fun is in guessing which one's you."

"I understood, then, the true horror of the world: it is that once a thing is done, it can never be undone.  A universe of wishing can't uncrush a bug, or unspeak a word, or erase even the tiniest action from the past's ledger. The past is fixed an unalterable, a tyrant, and none of us has any power against it.  How can we do anything, how can we live, knowing this?"

Don't Get Too Attached

Truth: I was honest when I said I don’t have a scale at home.  Ditched it before I moved, like I said.

Truth: One part I left out is that I discovered a digital scale at the locker room in the gym, and have been checking myself on it 2-3 times a week. This still a major improvement from once or twice a day when I had one at home, and I feel very free from having a number define the tone of every day before it even starts, but I still am tracking the numbers in a looser manner.

Truth: I am losing weight. A certain number of pounds even since Match left two weeks ago. I don’t even want to.  I am noticing certain features on my body that I think are a lot less attractive as a result, won’t go into details for fear of being triggering.

Truth: I want my body from April back. I just feel so trapped in this cycle of behaviors that it’s like it entirely overrides what I know it’s doing to me.

Truth: I CANNOT let myself get too used to this weight.  I am so bad about setting new norms (whether it be weight, food, workout time, etc) and getting entrenched in that rut, and I can’t let this weight become my new default. I know this is a common issue: you get used to something and even though it’s way below (or above or whatever, depending on the issue of concern) what you used to do, and you KNOW you weren’t fat/out of control at the old level, it still becomes very scary to think of reverting to that healthier state of mind/behavior/physical being.  I’ve crossed the thin (no pun intended) threshold where I start to notice effects on my concentration and memory, and I just can’t afford to let that happen, at this of all times.  I can’t let myself slip into a mindset of feeling obligated to not let myself get above this weight.

Truth: I do NOT mean to be dramatic, y’all, really my weight is not life-threatening or hospital worthy or anything like that. There is a certain weight X at which I tend to notice big changes in emotions, cognition, energy, etc etc, and I’ve crossed that but still am not anywhere near the neighborhood of where I have been at really sick times.

Now for some positives:
Truth: I am really feeling confident that I picked the right school/program.  I’m starting to meet people, am enjoying my classes so far, and have had a fantastic experience with the school as a whole so far.

Truth: But I really miss my dog.

Truth: iTunes has a free preview up of the new Matchbox Twenty album, zomg I love it.  If you were a fan of them way back when I definitely recommend checking it out.

Truth: I have been too broke to get my own internet connection, and the neighbor whose wifi I was “borrowing” moved out earlier this week.  How rude.  Fortunately I can do most interwebbing on my iPhone, but it’s still a bit of a pain for looking up PDFs or sending substantial emails.

Truth: Someone I’ve been friends with since undergard has sort of really hurt my feelings over the past week or two, and I don’t think I really let myself process it fully until today.  You know what? It fucking stings, like bad.  How’s that for articulation?  Granted, I brought it on myself a bit in ways that are far too complicated to go into.  Probably better that it happened now rather than later when things were messier.  And that I’m so worn out and drained right now that I’m in my “too numb to cry over anything” mode.

Truth: Oops, forgot I was on the positives part of the post now.  Smile is pasted back on in 3, 2, 1…

Truth: I hope y’all are doing well and I hope you know how much your support (both online and in other media) means to me.

"Should"

I wish there was some rubric or metric to gauge how I "should" feel on my third anniversary with Match vs my actual thoughts and emotions.  That would involve me sorting out what those actual thoughts and emotions actually are, though. Really not up for that at the moment.

Ghosts of Things That Never Got the Chance

I've been thinking a lot lately about how I've gotten myself into a really good situation with this program, and really, really want to try not to mess it up.  I have so many regrets from the millions of ways I've let the ED interfere with every.single.possible aspect of my life over the years.  I want to protect this experience that I'm starting; I want to be as normal as possible and at my max capacity and to make it something I can look back on with minimal regrets.  Thus, this passage in the novel that I'm currently reading really stood out to me:

"Over time, the ghosts of things that happened start to turn distant; once they've cut you a couple of million times, their edges blunt on your scar tissue, they wear thin.  The ones that slice like razors forever are the ghosts of things that never got the chance to happen."

Present Absences

So there are a couple of things about my lifestyle that are different here that I've failed to mention so far, both of which are absences that are probably improving conditions for me at home.

1) No scale.  I trashed it when I moved out of my place in late April.  This summer has been the longest I've gone without consistently weighing myself in YEARS.  When I had the scale, I couldn't imagine not using it every day.  It was how my day started.  Wake up, pee, shed any clothing, weigh.  Commence with living and all that mess.  If I didn't do it, I spent the whole day anxious that I didn't know the number, didn't know how hard I "needed" to be on myself.

Now that I haven't had one in a while, I honestly just don't want one.  I have too many other things on my mind right now I guess, I don't want to have to think about what the number is, what it was yesterday, why is it up/down/the same, oh my god what if it is up/down/unchanged still tomorrow, could I have had too much sodium yesterday or am I dehydrated from too much caffeine yesterday or WHAT THE HELL ELSE CAN I OBSESS ABOUT RELATED TO THIS GODFORSAKEN NUMBER BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THIS IS WHAT I DO BEST.  No thanks.

2) No exercise equipment at home.  This, my friends, is a HUGE change.
I wish I could say that it has decreased my exercise time, but alas it's sort of created the opposite situation, because now I have a long walk to and from the gym, so I burn a good bit of energy just getting to my workout and haven't been stellar at compensating for that.  I added calories deliberately on a day or two, have just let myself be a little more liberal on other days, but really the issue is that the exercise is eating up SO much of my day.  Compensating calories til I burst won't make up for the disruption in my lifestyle, and I really want/need to cut back.  Plus, I feel like absolute drained shit these days and I know that's the cause. I had a conversation with a friend about it yesterday that put some things in perspective for me (you rock, lady), and I think I'm going to have to grit my teeth and slash time starting tomorrow.

BUT to get back to the point, I think that having a living space without exercise equipment is helpful, because I can come home and just be in relax/recovery mode, rather than having to halfway dread coming home because I know more workouts are waiting for me. Something about coming home and doing exercising in the evening or late at night makes it seem sort of secretive and more disordered.  Not that eating up my day hours with it is any less disordered.  You know what, I want this all to just go away.

To end on a positive, I had my first literature discussion/project planning session with my PhD adviser (he needs a letter, let's call him K) this morning, and was SO happy with how it went.  He seemed to think I made some very good points and I learned a good bit from him too, and I really like the dynamic that we have so far. It's such a big contrast to my Master's adviser. For example, my MS project was not really related to any research that adviser had done before, so he sort of assumed I knew I was doing and showed no interest in helping me develop methods or theoretical foundations, just sort of left me to it. When it came time for my oral exams and thesis defense, he almost made a fool out of himself because he was so unfamiliar with the literature underlying my methods. It was kind of frustrating that I'd worked so hard to master everything but really could have bullshitted a lot of it and he wouldn't have known the difference.

In contrast, K. and I are starting a project (not my dissertation research, a side project) that covers new ground for both of us, so he set us up a schedule of going over the literature together to learn it at the same time and trade ideas, tackle new methods, etc as a team.  And I think it's going to be awesome.  I'm feeling more confident about this decision every day.  The rest of my lab flew in from Research Country today (a good number of them are native to that country), so it will be exciting to have that group dynamic going too.

I hope everyone's week is off to a great start, love y'all.

Doing My Best to Make Good

Ways I am trying to do well with some challenges:

1) One thing that is both great and potentially dangerous about PhD City is that I walk a LOT.  Now a trip to the gym involves a substantial round-trip walk, whereas before I always drove to my workouts.  With that plus walking around town and various errands, my energy output has been pretty constant and significant, and I've definitely felt the drained, fuzzy-headedness a few days that tell me I'm in an energy deficit even when I'm not "stomach hungry."  So, in an unfathomably logical move, I actually added extra calories today.  Who woulda thunk it?  At some point soon I'm going to just have to scale back the formal exercise to make up for all my foot-commuting, especially once classes start.  It will be okay, must tell myself this.

2) In addition to adding more calories today, I've been eating some things that aren't items I'd normally consume. That's because Match bought some groceries for himself during his visit and left them here and I am BROKER than broke can be at the moment and just can't let any of it go to waste.  It's nothing major, just things like having white bread instead of wheat, margarine instead of butter, little things that are probably totally insignificant on the scale at which I consume use them until they're used up.  But it did take a bit of a mental push for me to break rules about what is and isn't Cammy Food, you know? (by the way the simple fact that I normally buy butter now is a HUGE improvement over the state of my anti-fat food habits a few years ago).

3) The climate/environment here is one that has always resulted in an absolute disappearance of my appetite.  That was a factor in a really severe relapse that I had in 2007 when I spent the summer in a city in a different state but similar environment.  I've definitely noticed the effect here (Match totally lost his appetite here too, I swear I'm not crazy...okay you probably know better than that, but I swear THIS is not one of my forms of crazy).  But this time, unlike in 2007, instead of taking advantage of that, I'm being diligent about making sure I get my calories in, whether I feel the physical need to sit down for a meal or not.

4)  Okay so I know this is a common issue, but I was going through some recent pictures last night and couldn't believe how big I looked in them. To me.  Who the hell knows what it really looks like.  It was just so weird because I know that in actuality my weight is the lowest it's been in a long time, but it was either the angles in the photos or what I was wearing or or my current body proportions (anyone have boobs to spare?) or just my crazy fucking skewed perception.  I think the fact that I've built some muscle with the weight training and running (finally able to start lifting weights again, and didn't lose as much muscle as I'd feared during the hiatus), especially in my legs, just makes them look more solid or whatever, and I perceive that as bulk on myself when I would NOT on someone else.  I seriously almost just didn't post any photo with me in it from the whole road trip/exploring sessions that Match and I documented...but I guess I was in enough of an insomnia-induced haze that I put them up anyway.  And you know what? The one in which I thought my body looked the absolute worst and most bulky was the one that got the most "likes" and comments.  Go figure.

I thought I was going to have a friend from college here for the weekend (the person lives in an adjacent state, although still an 11 hour drive away), but that fell through at the last minute.  I'm bummed about that for a few reasons, but have to admit that it's been really nice to just have some quiet, laid-back time to myself, Match has only been gone for 3 days and I just came off an intensely social/cohabitation-heavy summer. I had a bit of a lonely spell when I first found out my friend wasn't coming, but it's probably better this way for multiple reasons.

I hope everyone has a fantabulous weekend, love y'all.

The Broke Insomniac Speaks

So, where to start.  Here's a positive: I'm in PhD City and I really love it here. It's in a different region/climate/overall type of place than I've ever lived before, but so far I definitely feel like it was a good choice.  It's a nice college town in a beautiful landscape, good for outdoorsy people like me, the people are unbelievably friendly, and so far all of my interactions with my new department have been very smooth and welcoming.

I drove for three days to get out here (two of them with Match in tow) and then had M. here for another 5 days, so food was not at its best during that time. Well that's not really owning it, I guess: I was not my best with food at the time. I have to say I did pretty decent on the car days, as far as managing exercise anxiety, but we were super active once we got here and I probably didn't get what I needed in every single day.  (Incidentally, I know I've griped about his health habits in the past but he is totally overhauling himself in a lot of ways related to that, material for another post maybe because I am glad for him but get a little triggered at times).

I have so much and so little to say about the Match stuff all at the same time.  Need way more than a blog post for it.  Our third anniversary is coming up next week (we celebrated it the night before he left).  This trip was overall more positive than the last one, but we had a few fights and more tense moments than I would have liked.  I felt guilty for being ready for him to leave, because under all the tension he is incredibly good to me. How can I feel simultaneously smothered and lonely in the relationship?  Like I said, I could do so much brain leakage about this and related complicating factors but I won't subject y'all to it right now...

One major stressor has been that part of switching from one grad program to another entails going almost 10 weeks without a paycheck at the same time I have to finance a cross-country move and set up a new apartment.  I had an intake appointment set up with the new psychologist for today, but had to reschedule it because I can't even afford the fucking gas to make the 50 mile drive and back.  I don't mean I didn't want to spend the money on it, I mean I literally do not have that much money in my bank account and have maxed out my credit card.  I get paid on September 1, and things should get at least somewhat better after that. Ugh.

As long as I'm whining, I pretty much never have insomnia issues, but I've been averaging about 3 hours a night here, both with and without Match.  The fact that I'm sleeping on an air mattress could be a factor (my apartment decor is Sparse Monastic at the moment), but I doubt it because it's the same one I was using at my parent's house last month.  I have been awake since before 3 AM, it's now past 10 PM, and I feel no urge to go to bed.  Haven't increased caffeine and even decreased it today in desperation for a good night's sleep before a big meeting tomorrow.  Second ugh of the post.

I feel like I just did a bunch of paragraphs of negatives.  Clearly, there is a lot of change and stress in my life right now.  But the bright side is that right before the move I was having a huge surge of self-doubt about whether I picked the right program, how I would do, whether I was making a huge mistake...but those fears have definitely been assuaged.  This place really reminds me of my undergrad town, and I already feel way more at home here than I did in the city where I did my Master's.

I'm also really, really going to try to use the start of this program to establish healthier routines.  I'm going to need to have a much more constant campus/office presence, which means no more letting workouts dictate my morning, afternoon, and evening schedules. Have to get serious about priorities and the fact that my career is my reason for being here.  I'm really in a mode of wanting to meet people and socialize, and I don't want the ED holding me back on that front either. I can do this.  I want to do this.  I really want to be able to do this.

Thanks again for all the supportive messages and texts throughout this transitional period, you  mean the world to me.  love y'all.

Moved

Hey lovelies, I have been out of the blog loop for the past week, full update soon though. Trip has definitely had its ups and downs, but the major up side is that I am totally in love with PhD City. Really going to try hard to set up healthy patterns here so I don't ruin it for myself.

Match goes home tomorrow, so more soon. Love y'all and please excuse typos, posting from phone.

Moving day

So I promised to update on last weekend but didn't.  I've been really trying to cram as much family stuff in as possible this week.  Leaving today for the three day drive to PhD City, today is an 11 hour drive to pick up Match, who is riding out with me and then flying back next week.

Dreading so many things about this.  This too shall pass, right?

Double Good News

Houston, we have a therapist. My intake session is August 15th.

I will update about my roadtrip weekend soon, but the short version is that I lived the hell out of that weekend and am SO happy with how it went.  Working on not trying to "make up" for it, especially given that I spent two days in the car for 11 hours on either side of the visit, but still felt like it was a win overall. Such a win that I am WAY too tired to write about it tonight.

zzz...

Something needs doing

Quote of the night during last night's festivities: "[Cammy] did you just hear yourself? Something needs doing."

Aaand right now someone needs coffee.  Love y'all.

Buoy

I'm heading out for my weekend trip tomorrow and shall return on Tuesday.  I am really, really going to try to be as normal of a person as possible and enjoy this visit instead of letting exercise anxiety get in the way. The friend that I'm going to see is an unbelievably awesome person, and I don't want ED stuff to pollute the trip.  It's just two travel days and two full days away from routines and such; I spent 3 weeks at the equator earlier this summer, so surely I can handle that.

I can't figure out why I'm so profoundly lonely.  I was talking to a friend today (you know who you are and you ROCK, lady), and I realized that a major force behind some of the things that have me torn right now is just sort of lonely apartness from the people I'm supposed to be closest to.  I have been visiting with old friends a few times a week, having conversations with other friends every day, living in tight quarters with my family, and I'm in a committed relationship.  So why does it feel like I'm a tiny little buoy bobbing alone in the ocean?

I don't think it's that I don't have people willing to give me what I need--I have fantastic people in my life. I think it's that I just don't know exactly what I need, much less how to ask for it. Conundrum, I guess.  I guess that upside to being a buoy is that even when you're adrift, you're still floating.  So there's that.  Or I just created a terribly butchered metaphor and really need to turn off the computer and go to bed.

Butchered metaphor or not, I should try to get some good sleep in before I hit the road tomorrow.  Have a great weekend; love y'all.

Strike One

Well, of the two therapists I sent queries to the other day, one turned me down (no openings for new clients) and the other hasn't answered yet.  The one that nixed me was the one I was most hopeful for, but she did recommend me to a psychologist friend with a practice in a town about equidistant from PhD City.  I'll contact that one today. Round and round we go, I guess.

By the way, this is a must-read: Eating: A Manifesto.  Not exactly Michael Pollan, but definitely needed to be said. Hat tip to Carrie for the link to it on Twitter this morning.

By the way, anyone struggling with finding insurance or funding for treatment should see the comment by JS on my last post, she has some good ideas for things to try. I had never even thought of looking at alumni health plans, but I'm going to check into that today.

Random photo of the day, from the Healthy is the New Skinny Facebook page:

Heading off for a coffee date with a friend, love y'all.

(Random coffee trivia: I just learned last week that dark roasts actually have LESS caffeine than light roasts despite the bolder flavor.  I feel like a failure of a coffee aficionado/caffeine addict that I was ignorant of that fact for so long).

Wednesday Miscellany

Randoms:

--It sucks to be broke, but the fact that Amazon offers a lot of classic books free for the Kindle means that I've been more motivated to avail myself of some of the titles I've always meant to read.  I have about a year's worth of Austen, Dickens, and Dostoyevsky downloaded at the moment.  Woot for culture.

--One of my least favorite ED things is that I can't enjoy a lot of physical contact with people that I love because I'm paranoid that they're "body checking" me for ribs, arm size, etc to spy on how my weight is doing.  I'm actually a pretty affectionate, cuddly person, and I hate it when stupid ED thoughts/symptoms mar that.  Does anyone else physically withdraw for this reason too, or am I unique in that eccentricity?

--The US women's soccer team kicks off their Olympics today (yes, before the opening ceremonies, go figure), heading off against France at noon EDT!  I have such a huge girlcrush on Hope Solo, and Abby Wambach is about as badass as they come.

--One of my goals for the next two weeks is to finally master driving a stick shift.  I know the principles and can sort of go through the motions of doing it, but with absolutely no degree of skill or finesse.  This is the only homework my PhD adviser gave me for the summer, since all of the field vehicles in my research country have manual transmissions. Here's to hoping I don't ruin my mom's new car...

--H. has helped me to brainstorm some treatment options and I sent inquiries to two clinics about an hour from where I'll be living soon.  One major constraint that I haven't mentioned is that my PhD university is in a pretty small college town, and the resources within that town are essentially nil.  The grad student health plan provides NO outpatient mental health benefits.  And the campus counseling center limits you to 4 sessions before "referring you to the community".  Yes, I've done my homework, but none of the results are encouraging.  Because I have no health benefits for it and have less than zero disposable income, my ability to get treatment even at one of these places 1-2 hours away is contingent upon them providing services on a sliding fee scale.  Fingers crossed I guess.

--I actually swallowed my pride and asked H. if she could do phone/Skype/email sessions with me. She said she honestly would like to but is so overbooked right now that she didn't think she could do an adequate job with it.  I was really hoping for a distance-treatment option since I'm going to be out of the country for 6 months out of every year through 2015.  Oh well.

--I really hate that I haven't been able to lift weights much this summer.  I know it's yet another exercise routine, but it made me feel great, decreased my propensity to freak out about gaining weight, and was helping me scale back on the heavy cardio.  I've joined a gym here that has great equipment, but it is really crowded with redneck guys all the time, and I'm way self conscious.  I didn't really let that get to me when I was a member of Gold's, despite all the meatheads there, I'm not sure what the difference is.  Well, I have a suspicion that part of it is that I just look even more ridiculous to them at my current weight.  I actually am unhappy with how my body looks right now and wish it was back to how it was before I moved.  But that wish and putting weight gain into action are oddly disconnected.  Work in progress.  I think I'm going to add some calories today, really going to try to follow through.  I have actually been eating my norm/baseline for most of the time I've been here, but the increased exercise in the summer heat is just sapping me.

--I've officially burned out on all of my summer songs.  Any recommendations for something new that you love?

--I'm going on a road trip this weekend to see one of my best friends from high school; leaving Saturday and coming home Tuesday (it's an 8.5 hour drive each direction).  I LOVE this girl and really, really want to try to clamp down on the exercise anxiety and just pretend to be a normal person for a few days.

--Recommended reading: A Desert Beyond Fear, from the New York Times blog chronicling experiences with anxiety. Clip:
"Fear is noisy, and it takes up a lot of space. Very little else — including matters of great importance — can break through. But at times, I can sit long enough to quiet the din of fear. When I do, in the part of my gut that is often churning with anxiety, I know that those“risky” decisions are the only things that do keep my world from flying apart."

***By the way, to the person that left a comment on the last post but requested that I not publish it, I'd love to send you an email as you suggested but couldn't find a Blogger profile for you with contact information.  If you'd like, just leave another comment (I won't publish it) or shoot me an email with your contact info.

Okay, I'm off to try to be productive so I can justify watching the soccer game in an hour. Love y'all.

Old Friends = Golden

Well I spent a good part of yesterday coming within an inch of breaking up with Match, my mother and I having a mutual meltdown event, and other miscellaneous crying and stressing and demonstrating poor coping methods.

I woke up this morning with that sort of drained yet cleansed feeling that typically follows that kind of emotional purge, and made it through most of the morning fairly peacefully until I got a message that caused a whole different kind of upwell.  Remember Friend #2 from my last post? She sent me this:

I'm so proud of you for fighting ED, babe. I know that it might always be a part of your life but not THE focus of your life. You're a much stronger and more confident woman that you used to be and I'm so happy to see how you've grown.

And no, I hadn't even mentioned to her that it's a hard time with that stuff right now. Nothing compares to the way an old friend can know you, right?

In other news, I sent a message to H., my college therapist (we're Facebook friends now) that I really think saved my life.  I asked her if she has recommendations for any therapists in the PhD City area, and sort of hinted that I'm having a rough go of it.  She was supportive, although she doesn't know anyone in that area.  She's been pushing me to do IP or at least IOP for years now, and now I think I am finally coming to regret not doing it when I actually had time and health insurance.  I don't seem to be capable of learning anything without doing it the hard way, though, so just another example of hindsight being 20/20.

Bragging by Proxy

So I've done a bunch of downer posts about me and I'm starting to feel guilty/embarrassed/boring.  Plus today was such a doozy that the last thing I want to write about is my status right now.  So in lieu of more of my usual lamentations, I'll talk about some other people in my life that are actually successful/inspiring.

Like I mentioned a while back, one plus to being in the segment of my summer in which I'm staying with family is that I'm back in the town where I went to high school (for the first time in the 7 years since I graduated), and it's given me the chance to catch up with a handful of old friends that either still live here or are similarly passing through for the summer.

I struggled with my ED pretty severely from the 7th grade all the way through high school, with just a year or two in there of subtle reprieve health-wise.  I was definitely not the only person in my cohort with issues, of course.  Over the past week I got a chance to catch up with two friends that have also dealt with EDs*, and it was SO fantastic to see them happy, healthy, and moving on with their lives.

Friend #1 had a short but steep bout with anorexia when we were seniors.  Her older sisters and some of her soccer teammates caught on to it, but not before she had lost a very significant amount of weight. Her parents forced her into therapy (she was against it at first, or course), and took a very heavy-handed approach (which I would have loathed but still kind of wish my parents had done)--very much the "wham-bam" treatment option.  And it worked.  Within a year she was back on track and has been healthy and ED-free ever since.  She is one of the smartest, strongest, funniest and most genuine people I've ever met, and I love that she's a testament to the fact that you can indeed kick the ED to the curb even if you start out fairly resistant to treatment.

Friend #2 had sort of a longer, rougher route to wellness.  She suffered from major swings of depression throughout high school, on top of struggling with bulimia and cutting.  Her mother was anorexic for a long time and actually committed suicide a couple of years after we graduated from high school.  I think her mother's suicide, while tragic of course, was a huge turning point for my friend, and really spurred her to start looking at her life more objectively and finally get the resolve to dump a toxic relationship, stick to her meds to better control the depression, and start taking an upper hand with a lot of other things. She went back to finish her degree, found a guy that treats her like the goddess she is, and has made leaps and bounds in therapy. She still has some body image issues, but overall she is doing SO fantastic.  And the cutting is so in the past that she has a beautiful new recovery tattoo covering the worst of the scars.  The whole time I was sitting across from her, I wished I could have shown the 2005 version of herself a video of the 2012 version, just to reassure her that the future WAS worth soldiering on for. She looked so happy, calm, balanced, and healthy.  Very inspiring.

So, woot for those two, I am so proud of them and glad to have them as reminders that recovery IS doable.  Just wanted to brag for them.

*I don't want to give the impression that I only hung out with EDers in high school (we actually didn't talk about our EDs much at all, I never even said the words "I have an eating disorder" out loud until I was a junior in college), but in a school of 2,000 students, there were bound to be a few of us that were at least obviously struggling, and probably many more that flew under the radar.  These are the only two friends I had that I know had EDs; it's just a coincidence that they were both among the 5 or so people I've gotten to hang out with over the past couple of weeks.

Remember that time...

So remember that time that I caught a random middle-aged guy looking me over in the gym?  Okay, not that atypical for anything young and female in a gym.

But remember that time when that random middle-aged guy at the gym looked me over, then later approached me while I was on the exercise bike and asked me if I had an eating disorder?  And recommended that I should get some religion to help me out with that and oh by the way he's a pastor at XYZ Church and don't I know what I'm doing is a sin?

Yeah, that time was this morning, and boy was it awkward.

I appreciate awareness about EDs, but I don't know if accusing people of sinning for having a disease really counts.

Despite my blustered denials to God's Guilt Messenger at the gym, I'm starting to get so fucking frustrated with myself (from a secular standpoint, he can take his sin-slinging and shove it) and am really wondering if I just don't have what it takes to go the distance.

Besides the exercise consuming my life again and eating not being stellar, other things are actually going okay, I promise to write about them at some point.

Offline

Because Comcast is a loser of a company, we still have no Internet at the new rental house. I've been doing most of my internetting on my iPhone, but for some reason it won't let me comment on blogs. Just so you know, I AM reading and hope to be more fully online soon. Not doing so hot right now...will figure it out, though.

Penance? Check.

Okay ladies, have to laugh: as of today I'm back in the town where I went to high school. There is a new gym that opened since I left, and I came to check it out today...and apparently they tore my old church down and built the gym directly where the chapel used to be. Reporting to the same place for much different rituals. Or perhaps not so different. Rather poetic, huh?

Back to home base

Well, the extended Match visit is officially over.  I left yesterday, with a ton of mixed feelings.  I'm so glad I stayed longer than originally planned, because the last 10 days of the visit were absolutely the best.  I am a bit relieved to be out of the pressure of being the center of attention all the time.  It's nice to just do what I feel like, when I feel like it, without negotiating with another person, but on the other hand I had a hell of a hard time falling asleep last night without having him there to rub my back while I was drifting off. I miss his companionship and our jokes, but not the bit of walking on eggshells we still had left. I am glad to have more chances for a bit of quiet solitude, but miss hearing him tool around on his guitar while he's waiting for me to get ready in the morning. See-saw, push and pull; feelings all over the board.  It was the most emotional he'd been at a parting. I couldn't shed a tear, but my heart broke for him. I care about him, truly, a lot.  He is a good person and I want him to be happy.  But I don't know if I've ever left a visit feeling so confused about our ultimate trajectory.  Oh well, time will tell.  We're planning next month's visit and I suppose things will play out.

So now I'm back with family.  Thought I'd handle being gymless with a run and a long dog walk today, but it fucking poured the entire.day.long.  Cue anxiety and jitters and a not so good day with food.  Starting tomorrow I'll be sharing a too-small rental duplex with my mom and two teenage brothers for the next 2.5 weeks, so that will be interesting. (My parents are trying to buy a new home right now so we're sort of in limbo in terms of housing).  On the bright side, my social calendar is filling pretty quickly with appointments to see old high school friends, so hopefully that will go well and keep me from getting too entrenched in a disordered routine here.

Being back here also means I have access to a scale again (my grandparents have a medical-type balancing scale that seems to be super accurate). The verdict: I didn't gain or lose an ounce on the 3 week visit with Match.  I was shocked, as I was sure I'd gained some back, but being able to go there and do well enough food to not lose any was a victory of a sort also.

It makes me feel a bit empowered that I can go to a new place, enjoy new restaurants, cook in front of someone else in close-quarters, have little splurges like sweet potato falafel (LOVE), froyo visits, and downing more than my share of a bottle of wine on the last night...without fear that I'm "ruining" anything or giving in to an irrational conviction that any deviation from my normal routines will balloon me.  It doesn't mean I am at all celebrating lack of weight gain, but just noting the value of the the lesson learned that I can be a bit free and spontaneous without major effect in the long run.

This next phase is going to be the biggest crunch in terms of not freaking out over exercise.  Heeere we go.  Love y'all.

Trying Hard

I am really *really* trying with food and have done way better over the last week. I think realizing how loose some of my clothes had gotten was a big reality check.

Having a Fantastic weekend with Match so far. And he really is doing a lot to try to minimize my discomfort with adding food. We ate at my new fave restaurant here downtown today (no nutrition facts available for this place but I love it anyway), and I spontaneously had a cocktail at lunch despite the extra calories, AND went to a self-serve froyo place (a tradition of ours) afterwards. And later at home I had an extra snack after dinner because I was still hungry despite having so much uncertainty with cals eating out today. I think I've hit my baseline calorie mark most days this week (an improvement).

My last post was really a downer and I just wanted to do a quick update (posting from iPhone). I hope everyone is having a fantabulous weekend so far, love y'all.

July CliffsNotes

I really can't blame anyone who has just given up reading this blog, given how crappy I've been about updating lately.
CliffsNotes

Relationship
Things with Match have gotten better since I last posted.  Still a bit tense at times (mostly when he’s stressed over classes and such) but overall feeling much more like "us." I think we are in a good place but I sometimes feel a little tired of being the focus of attention so much (I’ve never had a roommate or co-habitated in my life outside of camping on field research trips).

Exercise
Too much, in too much heat. Holy fuck it's been hot, hasn't it? And Match has no A/C here. Each day is a losing battle for electrolyte balance.  What else is new.  PS: I am so, so tired of feeling sticky and dirty even after I've just showered. I'm usually the one complaining about being cold when no one else is, but I actually seem to be pretty prone to heat stress as well (possibly because I dehydrate fast...because I abused my organs so much as a teen and now my kidneys suck.  Oh and my heart, which tends to flip out when I’m heat stressed and dehydrated also. thank you anorexia).

Food
I am trying *hard*.  I'm actually averaging more calories per day than on any previous Match visit...which puts me at almost my normal baseline intake. Baby steps.  I’ve stepped out of the box a bit on the types of things I’ll eat around him. I used to majorly restrict sodium and avoided anything of significant volume OR density when I knew I’d be spending time with him, which obviously is a big constraint).  So that’s  good, and he’s great about trying to make sure I’m comfortable with whatever around him.

We had one major ED-related run in.  I’ve been doing really great about eating out, and have been for a while.  I’m good about finding something on the menu and not freaking out.  This has become a bit trickier since I’ve become a vegetarian (albeit a fish-eating one), but I typically make it work.   Then on Wednesday I spontaneously suggested a lunch date for the holiday to a restaurant we’ve eaten at before and both like.  When they brought me my food, though, I suspected they hadn’t prepared it how I requested, so I got really anxious and picked at some of the sides then sent the rest back.  I was too anxious and flustered to pick out a new meal from the menu and told Match I’d just make myself something at home afterward.

Match got really upset with me, and it culminated in a bit of a confrontation about the ED stuff when we got home.  He made some valid points, and I know I put him in a difficult situation not infrequently.  I also think there were some things he just wasn’t “getting”, but I can’t really blame him for that.  I’m glad we had the talk, I guess.  His main concern was that it seems like the “baseline” keeps getting moved.  Lose weight, don’t gain it back, that’s the new norm.  Add exercise, make it routine, that’s the new norm.  Trends like that.  Which actually is a very real and valid observation.

I got a “just checking in” email from D., the dietician I had to leave behind when I moved.  She wanted to see how I was doing and offer to do a few phone sessions since I have no real treatment options during all the transition this summer.  Giving her the honest details on what I’ve been doing was a bit of a reality check, and has contributed to me trying even harder with getting my calorie intake up every day.  My main issue is that due to the switch from one school to another, I don’t get a paycheck in August, and my Master’s degree school botched my July check and still hasn’t paid me for this month, so I essentially can’t afford anything right now.  I think she got irritated with me that money is so prohibitive, but I can’t help that.  We’ll see.

Anyway, that’s the Status of Things.  I was supposed to go home this past Monday but extended it to next week.  I’m glad, because it’s been a really solid week for us as a couple and I’m glad we didn’t miss that.

I hope everyone is doing well.  Happy belated 4th of July, have a great weekend! Love y’all.

PS I have been pretty fascinated with following the #noshamefood trend on Twitter, good to see people not being embarrassed about foods they enjoy.

Flash Update from Trip

I was looking forward to this trip quite a bit, but it's really not going well.  Eating etc. is okay, all things considered I guess.  But I am really, really feeling shaky on the relationship part right now. We'll see how things play out I guess.

What I Learned on My Summer Vacation

So, the much-procrastinated "what I learned on my summer vacation" post.

I'm not really a newbie to the tropics--I've done research in 4 equatorial countries at this point.  But I still unfailingly learn new things and gain new cultural insights on every trip, even repeat trips to the same country. The trip I took last month was especially interesting, because it was a new continent for me, and thus home to much different cultures, language, people, foods, social norms, etc.

One thing that is unendingly novel about working in Third World countries is that people aren't so image-focused, and being ultra-thin is not necessarily chic.  People talk about other things at meals besides how guilty they feel for the food they're taking in, it's amazing. There are few (if any) fat-free or light versions of foods, and calorie labels are a lot less prevalent (or convenient, ever try to figure out the calories in a granola bar when the package lists it in joules per 100g instead of calories per serving? I have, unfortunately...).  You want a latte as a treat in the city? You get a latte, not a skinny latte or a light latte or sugar-free soy latte, but a mf original latte.  Of course, you don't get them in 24 oz cups, but that's a whole 'nother discussion for another time and place.

In the country where I did my Master's thesis work, the ideal for a woman's body is to be very curvy, and most people are indeed curvy or "pleasantly plump" and that's great.  Being too thin is seen as a being a sign that you are sort of low status and struggling, mostly because there even people with fairly low incomes can afford enough rice and potato chips to give their family roughly enough calories to stay on at least the average- to high-side of what we'd consider "normal" weight range (the processed food issue is another 'nother issue for another time and place).
Random anecdotes:
-- I will never forget our camp cook looking at me one night at dinner and saying wistfully: "Mija, you would be so pretty if only you could be fat."  LOL how often have you heard someone say that in the States?
-- Another day, my local field assistants (all male) worked up the courage to ask me if men in the U.S. really prefer their women to be so thin (yes, collective cringe at the "their" women), and I don't know if they ever really believed me when I told them that yes, in general that was the preference, but they seemed to get a kick out of it anyway, like I'd told them American guys like their women with pointy elf ears or something.
-- I was showing some of my family photos to the same camp cook mentioned above (she was sort of like a mother figure to our field crew), and she spotted a treadmill in the background of one of the photos.  She asked me about it, and I tried my best to explain it, and she literally sat down because she was laughing so hard.  This is a 50ish year old woman who easily looks 15 years older and walks about 8-10 km on mountain trails each way to work every day.  She told me, to paraphrase, that maybe that's why Americans have poor pale skinny daughters like me, must be why I got to my age (I was 23) without having a husband and kids yet, such a shame.  Burn...

The difference between my old research country and my PhD research country is that in PhD Country, curves are still appreciated and higher weight is a sign of status...but there, most people are still very thin, unlike in MS Country where people tend to be pretty stocky. In the cities most people were fairly healthy, but the countryside was a different story.

I'm talking about crowds full of sunken faces, bony street children literally asking if they could have the half-drunk cup of coffee I was carrying.  I'm talking about dozens and dozens of people lined up to shell out a few coins for the local stimulant leaf to chew so they won't be hungry for the dinner that never comes, I'm talking about 6+ foot tall grown men with biceps smaller than mine.  I'm talking about grocery stores that have to have guards with machine guns and metal detectors manning the doors.

It wasn't uncommon to see men (always men, for whatever reason), either alone or in groups, just sprawled on the ground in public places, just laying there on their backs.  So overwhelmed with disease, exhaustion, overexertion, malnutrition, and god knows what else that their bodies just could not do anything.  We would sometimes see someone miles, miles, even hours away from any town, just laying there next to the road, flat out with his arm flung across his eyes to protect them from the broiling sun.  The first time we saw someone like that, I asked the driver if he thought we should stop, maybe the man was sick, and he glanced over as we whooshed past and said "no, he is just hungry."  And that was it, just how things are, hunger is part of existence and that's that.

After seeing that portrait of utter "spent-ness" over and over again, it really hit home with me how lucky I am that I have the choice to never put my body through that.  I feel awful for how much I take for granted, especially since I've put so incredibly much time, pain, and mental energy over the years into keeping my body in a state of deprivation.  It really made me want to resolve to do better, to not take a single day, or meal, or doctor's visit, or well-fueled run through my safe neighborhood for granted, because if the cards of the universe had been dealt differently, it could have been me lying there on the side of the road, skin and bones sun-cooked in the dirt. Not even able to imagine the riches of comfort that the real me has a history of arbitrarily denying herself.  Just makes you think, you know?

So I felt all that while I was there, and then came right back and started struggling with the ED stuff again....hypocrisy acknowledged and guilt burning, I assure you. But I do think it gave me the perspective and even what I will tentatively call a "healthy degree of disgust" with myself, if that's possible, to want to pull out of it and make the most of the advantages I have in life. I know that I got them by luck rather than by virtue, and deluding myself I deserve those privileges enough to waste them is just...not something I want to carry.

Okay, so that's that.  I've probably been to Starbucks about 8 times in the 2+ weeks I've been back, and there has not been a single time that I reached for my cup of coffee from the barista without thinking about that grubby child on the street holding his stick-arms up for my last half-cup of caffeine water.  It's haunting, but at the same time part of me hopes I never let myself let it go.

Disclaimer: NONE of that is a moral judgment on ED sufferers, because I 100% believe that an ED is a valid disease with bio/physiological underpinnings, and no one person would choose to be that sick or does it to consciously thumb their nose at privileges. I think that sometimes certain experiences can just sort of jolt your motivation to fight off what is indeed a legit disease, and that's all I meant by this post.

Moving Past Dark Cycles

I've started to notice a sort of dark cycle when I start to have slippage.  No, not that dark cycle.  (Yes, I'm a nerd.  You know you love it).

I'm noticing that even accidental backsliding (ie I was not depressed or body-image challenged or intentionally trying to cut drop weight or escalate behaviors) puts me in a pretty dark place in a lot of aspects of life besides eating.  I get pretty apathetic about pain and self-care, I get ridiculously small amounts of sleep, etc.

When I've slipped, I drive more recklessly. I brush my teeth too hard.  My mood swings are steeper and deeper.  I make way more trips up the stairs, out to the car, etc than necessary, not to burn calories but just to inconvenience myself. I don't really put any effort into my appearance when I go out. I have a harder time making decisions. It's sort of a weird place. It just becomes a very odd, "Idontgiveafuckaboutmyself" cycle, and I've been through it enough times to know that it absolutely correlates to a drop in weight, intentional or otherwise, and creates a negative feedback cycle as the less healthy one becomes, the less one gives a shit. It's interesting to me that I don't even have to get to a critical weight for it to happen, I just have to have some degree of reversion and it's like my body just jumps into an old familiar mode.  I'm totally a believer in the mind-body feedback that goes on when it comes to your health (given that your mind is basically an emergent property of your body, but that's a discussion for another time and place), so it makes sense I suppose.

So I swear this is not going to be another post lamenting weight loss (which I swear I am working on reversing).  I just find the body-mind feedback loop endlessly fascinating, I feel like I've done the whole thing so many times now that I can sort of watch it with a clinical eye, because I know that I will in fact pull out of it and don't have to feel scared/despairing/hopeless anymore.  And now I'm tired of talking about that stuff and want to talk about positives.

Good things this week:
--I was asked to review a manuscript for a pretty prestigious science journal, which makes me feel both incredibly validated and incredibly intimidated.  But it's good to have a project.

--I bought a new sketch book.  I used to be very into art, actually, before I went to college and traded all of my hobbies for study time. I've shown Match some of my old work and I guess he thought I was legit enough that he has been bugging me to pick it up again as a non-exercise stress outlet, and I finally listened.  I think I might work on making some sketches/composite scenes from the photos I took during my trip last month.

--Just FOUR DAYS til my Match visit!

--Season 5 is the best.season.ever. of Mad Men.  The saddest ever also, but just beautifully done.  Just FYI.

--I have all of the formatting/editing/etc DONE on my thesis and just need one more signature from my adviser (on vacation this week) before I can officially submit it to the grad school.  woot woot!

--Ordered graduation announcements this week!  I'm not actually going to my graduation, as I hated that school and hope to never set foot in that city again for the rest of my life, but I figured I should do something to make the degree seem like a milestone.

--This borders on confounding with the overexercise explosion since I've been home, but I am making such marked progress with my running, it makes me so happy.  I've kept the distance consistent and have just increased the proportion of it that I run vs walk (I started off really easing into it), and am to the point of running nearly all of it still with NO knee pain whatsoever. And this is despite going cold turkey from it for 3 weeks while I was out of the country.  I will never be a daily runner again, and I never was or will be into very long distances, but just knowing I didn't actually screw my body up too much to do something I love is a huge relief.  And a motivation to keep it healthy and not go out of control (who, me? never! okay, often).

--A picture is worth a thousand words:

--After I get back from the Match trip I'll be staying with my family at their new house, in a city near where I went to high school, so I'm hoping it will be a good chance to catch up with old friends.  My maternal grandparents will also be nearby--I am extremely close to them; they helped to raise me for a while after my mom and I left my biological father when I was a young kid.  So I think that the gap between the Match visit and me moving to PhD city in August will be way less lonely and isolated than the past couple of weeks have been.

Okay, those are my positives.  Yet another sort of self-update focused post, though, I actually have one planned sharing some of the health-mind-body related insights I felt like I took away from my recent trip.

Participatory prompt: going back to the art item above, tell me about a hobby/talent/avocation that you use to de-stress?

Love y'all.
