I agree that it is incumbent on us all to be informed and skeptical, and not just in response to advertising. But it is futile to rely on the critical thinking of even the most astute and determined consumer. Such a suggestion erroneously assumes that simply knowing that an image is falsified immunizes you from its effect. Not so. Advertisers realize that images also affect us subconsciously. Nor can you escape such images: they are ubiquitous. Even if you never open a fashion magazine, you still interact with and are affected by those who do. We are social creatures, profoundly influenced by the people and ideas of our community.
